BED occupancy at hospitals and quarantine centres has significantly decreased, giving space to the public health sector to recharge after a deluge of cases earlier this year, said Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He said quarantine centres and hospital beds occupancy has dropped to 47%, while Intensive Care Unit (ICU) occupancy had also dropped to 38%.

Dr Noor Hisham said compared to when Covid-19 occupancy almost reached 80-90% in January, the overall occupancy for Covid-19 is now 55%.

“Now, I think we are able to accommodate some of these patients, and our facilities can be enhanced from time to time,” he said, referring to the 19,800 people in home quarantine because they tested positive for Covid-19.

Earlier this year, Dr Noor Hisham said the health system was reaching its breaking point as cases began to spike in January.

The alarming daily figures saw the country going into another movement control order on January 13, which will last until March 4. – February 16, 2021.
