Beware politicians playing race card, says PM

MALAYSIANS should steer clear of politicians who take advantage of racial sentiments to further their aims, warned Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin said keeping such politics at bay was the biggest challenge facing a multicultural society.

“We should stay clear of politicians who try to raise their political stock by exploiting racial sentiments,” he said at the virtual launch of the National Unity Plan and National Unity Action Plan (Blueprint) 2021-2030.

“The government will never compromise in matters that could jeopardise national unity. It was based on this principle that the Ministry of National Unity was created – to shoulder the responsibility to ensure the success of the national unity agenda.”

Muhyiddin lauded the cooperation and empathy demonstrated by the people and frontliners who cared for one another regardless of race or religion in the battle against Covid-19.

“This empathy needs to be strengthened as it can help us overcome challenges to race relations more effectively.”

Efforts must also continue to boost unity among Malaysians, he said.

“The quest for unity is a journey not a destination.”

Based on the concept of unity in diversity, with long-term strategies to harness, strengthen and maintain oneness among the people, the 10-year national unity blueprint will support the government agenda.

The three objectives of the agenda are to strengthen national integration based on the federal constitution and Rukun Negara, build a national identity, and instilling appreciation for unity among the people.

Muhyiddin said to meet the objectives, it was crucial that the agenda had the support of all parties, especially civil society and the private sector. – February 15, 2021.

  • BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE! Are you not aware that under the Penal Code it is an offence to make statements that can cause racial disharmony? So why are you advising the people to stay away from politicians who make racist statements and not turning your guns on the politicians? Shouldn't the culprit politicians be arrested, charged, sentenced and prohibited from further making such statements? It is ridiculous asking the ordinary people to run from the fires but to do nothing to stop politicians lighting the fires in the first place. You are giving legitimacy to the culprit politicians to keep making racist statements by putting the onus on the public to stay away from them. It's like defending the politicians and blaming the public for not "staying away" from such politicians. This kind of leadership cannot help improve harmony.
