Daily virus cases dip below 3,000 after nearly a month

AFTER 26 days straight days of reporting more than 3,000 Covid-19 cases daily, Malaysia today recorded 2,764 new infections in the last 24 hours, said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. 

The director-general of health said that of the new cases, six were imported and the rest were local transmissions.

He said that Selangor once again topped the cases by state with 862 cases, followed by Johor with 521 and Kuala Lumpur with 422.

On overall cases, Selangor breached the 80,000 mark with today’s new infections in the state.

The country’s most densely populated state now has cumulative 80,442 cases, followed by Sabah with 50,723 cases and Kuala Lumpur with 29,940. 

Noor Hisham also said that recoveries outnumbered new cases today, with 3,887 patients being discharged from hospitals.

The number of active cases in the country is now at 50,841. 

Noor Hisham said that 289 patients are admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) and 127 require respiratory support. 

Besides this, Malaysia also reported 13 deaths, taking the fatalities toll to 909. All victims were local.

Six deaths were reported in Selangor, two each in Sabah, Sarawak and Johor, and one in Kuala Lumpur. 

All but one victim had underlying medical conditions. – February 9, 2021.
