7 new clusters, staggering 97% cases related to workplaces

THE Health Ministry identified seven new Covid-19 clusters in the country, of which six are related to workplaces, said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The director-general of health said 727 cases were reported from seven clusters today, and workplace-related clusters contributed to 708 infections or 97% of total cases.

Of the six workplace clusters, he said two were reported in Selangor and one each was reported in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Pahang and Malacca.

He said the sole community-based cluster was reported in Perak.

Noor Hisham said most cases in today’s clusters were reported at construction sites and factories.

He said the workplace cluster that reported the most number of cases is the Jalan Cheras construction site cluster, detected in the district of Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

As of today, 823 individuals were screened here and 332 were reported positive for Covid-19.

He said the second workplace cluster that reported a high number of cases today is Jalan Ragum, which involved a factory.

Noor Hisham said this cluster was spread over the districts of Klang and Petaling, and to date, of 542 people screened, 219 have tested positive for the virus.

He said the third workplace cluster, which involved a factory, is Parit Jamil Datar, which was detected in the district of Muar, Johor.

Noor Hisham said the name for the cluster was given based on the workers’ hostel located in Jalan Parit Jamil Darat, Parit Jawa, Muar.

He said 189 people were screened here and the results of 26 individuals returned positive.

He said Taman Muhibbah is the next workplace cluster, identified in the districts of Temerloh and Kuantan in Pahang.

He said this cluster involved a public administration centre in Kuantan and the name for the cluster was given based on the locality of the index case, which is Taman Muhibbah, Temerloh.

To date, 14 of 47 individuals screened tested positive for Covid-19.

The final workplace cluster reported today is Serkam Industry, detected at a factory in the districts of Jasin and Melaka Tengah, Malacca.

As of February 2, a total of 1,700 individuals were screened here and 69 were positive for Covid-19.

Noor Hisham said the sole community-based cluster reported in Hulu Perak, Perak is Semarak Bersia.

The name for the cluster refers to the locality where the cases were reported, which is Taman Semarak and Bersia, Gerik, Hulu Perak.

As of today, 58 individuals were screened in this cluster and 19 were found to be Covid-19 positive.

The seven new clusters reported today brings the total number of clusters in the country to 838, of which 404 are still active.

Of the active clusters, 70 clusters are still reporting new cases.

Besides the Jalan Cheras construction site cluster and Jalan Ragum cluster reported today, another cluster that recorded high cases is Jalan Seroja with 204 cases.

Four clusters ended today – they are Bukit Angkat, Bukit Semenyih construction site, Bina Kiara construction site and Brumas.

A total of 434 clusters have ended as of today, including the four mentioned above. – February 2, 2021.
