THE Song and Kapit districts of Sarawak will be under the movement control order (MCO) tomorrow until February 15 following an increase in Covid-19 cases, Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.

“The Heath Ministry has confirmed an increase in Covid-19 cases in the Song district with 93 cases, when it was previously a green zone.

“Meanwhile in the Kapit district, cases have increased from none to 31,” the National Security Council spokesman said in a statement.

Sarawak is the only state that is not under a blanket MCO. Movement restrictions are enforced only in Sibu and now, Song and Kapit.

The MCO forbids residents from leaving their homes except to buy necessities and that is limited to two people going out per household.

“Restaurants, shops, eateries, grocery stores and convenience stores are allowed to open between 6am and 8pm.”

The rest of the standard operating procedure remains unchanged, he said.

On January 11, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced a second MCO, lasting from January 13-26 for six states following an alarming rise in infections. The MCO was later expanded nationwide, save for Sarawak, until February 4.

Daily cases have numbered in the thousands since November. They breached 5,000 in the last two days and were 5,298 today. – January 31, 2021.
