Petaling district in red alert over virus surge

The Petaling district in Selangor has reported more than 1,500 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, almost half the state's total in the same period. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, January 29, 2021.

AS Malaysia reported a record high 5,725 Covid-19 cases today, one particular state that caught the attention was Selangor.

The state, which encircles capital city Kuala Lumpur, reported 3,126 cases, the highest daily caseload of any state yet.

According to the Selangor state health department, a total of 1,530 cases, almost half of the cases in Selangor today, were reported in the Petaling district, which covers the most densely populated areas of the state.

The sub-districts that fall under Petaling include Bukit Raja, Damansara, Petaling Jaya and Sg Buloh and the prison population.

The Petaling Jaya sub-district reported 543 cases, followed by Damansara (538), Sg Buloh (313) and Bukit Raja (136).

With 1,530 cases today, the cumulative cases in the district were at 13,035, with active cases being at 2,949.

Other districts in Selangor that reported a high number of cases today were Hulu Langat (779), followed by Hulu Selangor (755) and Sepang (485).

The total case count in Selangor is 62,189.

A total of 54,451 patients have been discharged, leaving the number of active cases in the state at 7,599.

The state has thus far recorded 139 deaths. – January 29, 2021.
