AMANAH leader Hanipa Maidin today raised questions over police investigation into Anwar Ibrahim, who urged the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to overturn the emergency proclamation.

The former deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said it is unfair to consider the opposition leader’s call a crime even if one politically disagrees with him.

“As far as I know, (suggesting the) calling off (the) emergency proclamation per se by anybody is not a crime,” the Sepang MP said in a Facebook post.

“Lest we forget, the speaker of the Senate (a member of Bersatu), at one time, even questioned the ‘appropriateness’ of the rejection of the first call for an emergency by the king.

“Anwar’s statement was well within the rights protected by the constitution and should not necessitate interference by the police.

“May common sense prevail,” said Hanipa.

Police said yesterday Anwar, who is also the Port Dickson MP, is under investigations after a report was lodged in Kuala Lumpur.

Anwar had earlier this month urged all lawmakers to appeal in writing to the Agong to rescind the emergency proclamation and reconvene Parliament as soon as possible.

The PKR president denied accusations of treason, claiming that up to 115 MPs support the call to revoke the emergency.

Anwar has also applied for leave to launch a judicial review to dispute the emergency proclamation and suspension of Parliament and state assemblies by the government. – January 28, 2021.
