11 new Covid-19 clusters, 8 linked to workplaces

Malaysia detects 11 new Covid-19 clusters today, with the nationwide count standing at 724. – The Malaysian Insight pic by Najjua Zulkefli, January 23, 2021.

THE Health Ministry has detected 11 new Covid-19 clusters today, taking the nationwide count to 724, said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.  

The director-general of health said of the figure, eight are workplace clusters.  

He said 480 cases were reported among the 11 clusters, with workplaces contributing 403 cases or 83.9%. 

Noor Hisham said the first workplace cluster detected was Bali Residence construction site cluster in the districts of Malacca Tengah and Alor Gajah in Malacca.  

He said 204 people tested positive for Covid-19 out of 403 people screened.  

Noor Hisham said the second workplace cluster, Jalan Wangsa, is also a construction site located in the district of Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur.  

As of today, he said 289 people were screened, with 45 testing positive.  

He said the third workplace cluster, Jalan Timah, was detected in the district of Johor Baru, Johor.  

Noor Hisham said this cluster involves a factory worker and as of today, 34 out of 281 screened were positive for the virus.  

Noor Hisham said the Tanjung cluster is the next workplace cluster identified by the ministry.  

This cluster, related to factory workers, was also detected in Johor Baru, Johor.  

Out of 151 screened, 33 returned positive. 

He said another workplace cluster detected in the district of Johor Baru is Jalan Canggih. 

As of today, 22 out of 457 people screened tested positive for the virus.

Noor Hisham said the sixth workplace cluster involving a factory was detected in Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur.  

The cluster, named Kilang Setapak, has 48 people screened as of today, with 30 positive for Covid-19.  

The seventh workplace cluster is Lebuh Puteri construction site, detected in the district of Petaling in Selangor.  

He said 200 individuals were screened, and 19 returned positive.  

The final workplace cluster identified today was Kg Bombalai, involving the Tawau and Kalabakan districts in Sabah. 

As of today, he said 16 of 59 screened were Covid-19 positive. 

Among other clusters detected today were Kg Bukit Biah, Tembok Sg Udang and Kg Guntong Luar. 

Kg Bukit Biah spreads over the Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Besut and Kemaman districts in Terengganu.  

Noor Hisham said this cluster reported 39 positive cases out of 131 screened.  

Tembok Sg Udang involves a detention centre in Malacca Tengah, Malacca.  

He said 53 people were screened, and 25 tested positive – inmates and staff included. 

The final cluster reported today was Kg Guntong Luar, which involves the districts of Setiu and Kuala Nerus in Terengganu.  

As of today, of 65 people were screened, 13 tested positive.  

Meanwhile, Noor Hisham said beside the Bali Bina construction site cluster, which recorded 203 cases today, other clusters reporting high number of cases are Pasai (132) and Beringin (74). 

Five clusters ended today. They are Jalan Rusa, Tower, Cassia Diamond, Bukit Punai and Estate Maju.  

With the five clusters ending today, the total number of clusters that have shut are 383. – January 23, 2021.
