4,008 new infections, active cases breach 40,000 mark

ACTIVE Covid-19 cases in the nation surpassed the 40,000 mark today with 4,008 new infections reported in the last 24 hours, the second highest since the onset of the pandemic.

With today’s case count, Malaysia has recorded more than 3,000 new daily infections for seven straight days, taking the caseload to 169,379. 

Of the total, 4,003 cases recorded today were local transmissions while five cases were imported.

Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that Selangor once again reported the highest daily cases by state with 1,391 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 513 cases and Johor with 470 cases. 

This would be the 13th consecutive day that Selangor has recorded more cases than other states, with the total case tally in the state now at 50,636. 

Sabah is second on the overall list with 45,008 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 19,411. 

Noor Hisham said 2,374 patients were discharged today, taking the total number of recoveries to 127,662 or 75.4% of total cases in the country. 

Eleven fatalities were recorded in today, taking the death toll to 630.

Of the 11 fatalities, four deaths were recorded in Selangor, three each in Sabah and Johor, and one in Sarawak. 

Six men and five women were the victims today, with the oldest aged 90 and the youngest the sole victim in Sarawak, aged 42.

Ten of the 11 victims had underlying medical conditions. 

From the 41,087 active cases, 246 are admitted in ICU with 96 of them requiring respiratory assistance.  – January 20, 2021.
