5 sentenced to death for fatal beating of robber

A TIGER hungry for its own justice was how a judge described five men who were sentenced to death for fatally beating up a robber, The Star reported.

The five, who included two army officers, were found guilty of the murder of Mohd Yusof Abd Khalib, then 26.

They had set upon the victim outside of a snooker club in Taman Intan Biaduri, Sentul, at 8.30pm on May 1, 2016.

The next day, the victim had died in a hospital where he was taken after the beating.

The five are army officers Mohamad Hairul Abdullah and Lawrence anak Masing, both 34, self-employed Zaidi Zainal, 31, supervisor Chong Kai Weng, 31 and security guard M. Yogesvaran, 24.

The prosecution had proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt said Judicial Commissioner Mohamad Shariff Abu Samah.

Shariff also described as nonsense the five’s claim that they were making a citizen’s arrest and had planned to hand over Yusof to the police.

“Although the victim might have been a robber, the correct measure would be to take him to the police station, not to attack him like a tiger hungry for its own justice,” he said in reading a 245-page written judgement today.

The accused were represented by lawyer M. Jagesh, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Nazneen Zulkifli prosecuted. – December 27, 2017.
