Covid-19 death toll breaches 600 mark

MALAYSIA’S overall death toll from Covid-19 hit 601 today with seven new deaths.

Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, in a statement, also said 3,339 new Covid-19 cases were recorded today, the fifth consecutive day with more than 3,000 new daily cases.

The country hit a record of 4,029 new daily infections yesterday.

He said the cumulative caseload now stands at 158,434.

There were 2,676 recoveries reported today, with the total number of recovered patients at 120,051.

There are now 37,782 active cases in the country, Noor Hisham added.

A total of 240 patients are receiving treatment in the intensive care unit, with 93 requiring respiratory assistance.

Noor Hisham said out of today’s total, 15 were imported cases while the rest were locally transmissions.

Cases by states showed that Selangor once again topped the list, with the state reporting 1,314 infections, followed by Sabah with 393 cases and Johor with 362 cases.

Selangor has topped the list of cases recorded by state for the 10th straight day.

Elaborating the details on today’s fatalities, Noor Hisham said three deaths were reported in Selangor, two in Johor and one each in Negri Sembilan and Kedah.

Four of the seven victims were female.

Six victims had underlying medical conditions, and a common disease among five was diabetes. 

The youngest victim, 32, had no medical record.

This is also the 39th day that Malaysia has reported consecutive four-digit daily cases. The last three-digit daily infections were recorded on December 9, 2020, at 959 cases. – January 17, 2021.
