Highest-ever record of 4,029 Covid-19 cases reported

MALAYSIA smashed all previous records of daily Covid-19 cases today after it reported 4,029 new infections in the past 24 hours.

This is also the first time it has reported more than 4,000 new cases in a single day since the onset of the pandemic last year.

In a statement, the Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that the fresh cases have brought the caseload to 155,095 while active cases rose to 37,126.

He said Selangor once again led the tally with 1,466 cases followed by Johor and Sabah with 719 and 449 cases respectively.

Noor Hisham said there were eight fatalities reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 594.

He said only eight of today’s cases were imported.

On recoveries, Noor Hisham said 2,148 people were discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours.

With this, he said the total number of recoveries from the coronavirus now stood at 117,375.

Meanwhile, he said 205 patients are currently warded in the intensive care unit, of whom 79 require respiratory support. – January 16, 2021.
