PUTRAJAYA is being unfair to small traders by directing them shut during the movement control order (MCO), while furniture and jewellery shops are allowed to open, said former prime minister Najib Razak.

In a series of Facebook posts, Najib posted pictures of Ikea and Habib Jewels stores operating, and questioned the logic behind it.

“Since when is selling gold and jewellery an essential service during MCO? Essential service for who?

“All Ikea outlets across the country are allowed to operate during the MCO. Even kids and senior citizens are allowed to visit, although they’re not encouraged to.

“Is the sale of furniture included under essential services? Meanwhile, numerous small traders aren’t allowed to operate. We must be fair to all,” he said.

He said this MCO should be enforced strictly if the country wants to reduce its Covid-19 cases and to avoid a prolonged lockdown.

Ikea said on Facebook all its branches in Malaysia will open from 10am to 8pm daily.

It said its restaurants, bistros and Swedish food marts are open only for deliveries or takeaways.

Habib Jewels also said on Wednesday that it will remain open during the MCO. – January 15, 2021.
