A SERIOUSLY injured man had to wait in the dark, drenched and cold, for more than two hours on the side of a ravine before help arrived.

The man was a passenger of a four-wheel drive that had slid off a rural Sarawak road and plunged into a ravine 92m deep.

A friend died on the spot in the mishap while another, who escaped with nothing more than just a shock, raised the alarm.

Police as well as the fire and rescue department both identified the dead victim as 20 year-old Delvin Dinisius.

The department said they were notified by Medamit police of the accident on the Ulu Medamit-Bukit Kilo O Road in Baram in Sarawak’s Limbang division, at around 5.30pm.

But they only reached the site of the accident past 8pm, even though the scene was only 97km from Medamit.

The rescue team despatched described the logging road as dangerous as it was raining at the time.

The road, in a mountainous area, was also covered in fog.

The accident illustrates the treacherous conditions of the state’s timber roads during the current monsoon season.

The road leads to the settlement of Long Napir, home to the Kelabit and Penan people.

The state has been battered in the last two days by 24 hours of rain.

This has resulted in floods in Kuching, Bau, Serian, Simunjan, Samarahan and Miri, forcing more than 3,000 people out of their homes to relief centres. – January 14, 2021.
