11 new virus clusters, 5 linked to workplaces

Malaysia records 11 new Covid-19 clusters today, five of which are linked to workplaces. – The Malaysian Insight by Irwan Majid, January 12, 2021.

THE Health Ministry reported 11 new Covid-19 clusters today, five of which are workplace-related, said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. 

The director-general of health said 279 cases were reported from the 11 new clusters, with 181 of them from workplace clusters. 

He said this meant that 64% of today’s cases are linked to workplace clusters. 

Noor Hisham said the Jalan Manan cluster in the district of Klang, Selangor was the first workplace cluster reported. 

This involves a factory and as of today, 83 people have tested positive for the virus from 311 individuals screened. 

He said the second workplace cluster is Persiaran Kuala, which spread over the districts of Petaling, Klang and Sabak Bernam in Selangor.  

Noor Hisham said this cluster also involves a factory and from 2,202 individuals screened for Covid-19, 44 have tested positive. 

He said the next workplace cluster involves a security guard company’s hostel, detected in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur.  

Noor Hisham said 21 people have tested positive for Covid-19 from 134 screened. 

He said the fourth workplace cluster is Iris and it involves a supermarket in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur.  

As of today, he said 414 have been screened and of the total, 11 have tested positive. 

Noor Hisham said the cluster was named based on the residence of the index case, who lived in Iris apartment in Taman Desa.  

He said the fifth and final workplace cluster is Jalan Kiara, which was also detected in Kuala Lumpur, involving the districts of Kepong and Cheras. 

This cluster also involves a supermarket and the name for the cluster was given based on the locality of Jalan Kiara, Mont Kiara, where the cases were reported.  

From the 85 screened, 22 positive cases have been reported as of today. 

Besides this, the other clusters reported were Dialysis Batu, Dialysis Putra, Bukit Sekubong, Kg Badak, Taman Kesedar and Permint Harmoni. 

He said the Dialysis Batu cluster involves the districts of Titiwangsa, Cheras and Kepong in Kuala Lumpur. 

This dialysis centre is located at Taman Perindustrian IKS, Batu Caves. 

As of today, from 140 people screened, six have tested positive for Covid-19. 

The next cluster, Noor Hisham said was also detected at a dialysis centre in Putrajaya.  

This cluster is named Dialysis Putra and 10 positive cases have been detected, out of 25 screened.  

Noor Hisham said Bukit Sekubong is the eighth cluster reported today, which was detected in Bintulu, Sarawak. 

A total of 21 out of 32 people screened tested positive for Covid-19.

The ninth cluster reported today is Kg Badak, which involves the Kota Baru district in Kelantan and Hulu Langat district in Selangor. 

From 170 screened here, 39 have tested positive for the virus.  

The next cluster is Taman Kesedar, which involves the Gua Musang district in Kelantan. 

Noor Hisham said the index case in this cluster has a travel history to Kuala Lumpur.  

As of today, from 157 people screened, 14 tested positive for the Covid-19. 

The final cluster reported today is Permint Harmoni in the district of Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.  

Eight reported positive for Covid-19, from a total of 52 screened.  

The 11 new clusters reported today bring the total clusters in the country to 605, of which 261 are still active.  

A total of 77 out of 261 clusters are actively reporting new cases.  

Noor Hisham said a total of 439 cases or 13.3% today were from clusters related to lockup, immigration detention centres and prisons.  

Clusters that reported a high number of cases today are Jalan Harapan Prison, which reported 192 cases, followed by Teratai (176) and Tembok Choc (162). 

Noor Hisham said eight clusters came to end today – Atabara, Senu Setia, Bonggaya, Jemai, Pengkalan Barat, Puteh Lama construction site, Jalan Bukit construction site and Sabaru.  

With eight clusters concluding today, Noor Hisham said that a total of 344 clusters in the country have come to an end. – January 12, 2021.
