Cooperation with other parties was what enabled Amanah to win seats in GE14, says party president Mohamad Sabu. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, December 27, 2020.

AMANAH will not be able to face the 15th general election alone, which is why the party must unite with others, said president Mohamad Sabu.

He said the opposition bloc will be able to repeat the feat achieved in the last elections and be able to form government.

“If they do not follow our suggestion, we quit and we are left alone. If we are alone, can we win?

“Because we are in Pakatan Harapan (PH), in Johor we won nine seats. Who would have expected this? This is because of cooperation,” he said in his closing speech at the Amanah annual convention in Melaka today.

The former defence minister was referring to Amanah’s suggestion yesterday to have a grand coalition among the opposition parties.

Mohamad Sabu, better known as Mat Sabu, stressed Amanah was still a part of PH and was still part of the coalition despite the suggestion.

“We pledge to be with PKR, DAP and others so we have more than 108 MPs and can retake… the government,” he said.

The Kota Raja MP added the NGOs were no longer with PH, explaining they were instrumental in gathering support among the voters previously.

“I see the NGOs are not really supporting the opposition. The NGOs can move the non-partisan voters,” said Mat Sabu.

Recently, Mohamad and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng released a statement asking for the opposition to unite to prepare for the next elections.

They also urged opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to not flirt with the government MPs and stick with the already solid opposition.

Stop seat-grabbing

Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar, meanwhile, said the opposition would be able to form a grand coalition if they do not fight for the same seats.

“In politics we cannot be alone and if there is infighting (among us) in the country.

“We want to head to GE15 but PH can’t do it alone but there needs to be other parties with us,” he said.

The Pokok Sena MP said if there was a coalition, overlapping seats among the opposition can be avoided.

“Our politics is to return the people’s mandate, for that there needs to be will from all (opposition) parties in the country.

“When we face elections, PH will contest and PN will contest. If the opposition fights among themselves, it will only be detrimental,” said Mahfuz.

The current PH coalition is made up of PKR with 38 seats, DAP with 42 and Amanah with 11 seats.

The oppostion bloc is also made up of Warisan with 8 seats, yet-to-be registered Pejuang with 4 seats, UPKO with a single seat, Parti Sarawak Bersatu with two seats and two independents. – December 27, 2020.
