UMNO must return to power to keep the Malays safe, said the party’s longest serving member of Parliament Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

He also said the party must promote young leaders to lead in order to stay relevant.

The chairman of Umno’s council of advisers said this today in a forum organised by the National Professor Council (MPN).

His comment came as he was asked on who Umno should align itself with in the next general election.

“We cannot give in to Bersatu. They took many of our members and that is stealing. Bersatu came from Umno.

“Umno must return to power and if not, the Malays will not be safe and the country will not be at peace.

“The non-Malays too are hoping that the Malays will return to power. We are considerate people and we have never taken away what is not ours,” he said.

The Gua Musang MP has made several anti-Bersatu remarks previously, and has also branded the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government led by Bersatu’s president Muhyiddin Yassin as illegitimate.

Last month, he said many Umno leaders now have second thoughts about working with Bersatu in the next general election.

He had also urged Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun to allow no-confidence motions against the prime minister to be debated.

Today, Razaleigh said Muhyiddin must be tested in the Dewan Rakyat to prove that he has the support from the majority MPs to continue to lead the country.

The Kelantan prince said he is not going against the king’s decision to appoint Muhyiddin, explaining that the Pagoh MP must show his strength in Parliament.

“I have no problem with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. To appoint a prime minister, that is his prerogative.

“But Muhyiddin must be tested in Parliament, as long as he is not tested, it shows that he has no majority support in the house. We need a majority vote in the Dewan Rakyat,” he said.

Muhyiddin enjoys a slim majority in Parliament since taking over Putrajaya from Pakatan Harapan back in February.

There have been reports claiming that the PN government might collapse during the third reading of the 2021 Budget held this month.

However, the budget was passed after MPs in the government bloc decided to back Muhyiddin. Razaleigh abstained from voting.

Today, Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi demanded Umno MPs to withdraw their support for Muhyiddin over unhappiness with the EPF withdrawals and bank loan moratoriums.

He accused PN of failure to fulfill promises on the loan moratorium and Employees’ Provident Fund withdrawals made during the Budget 2021 debate last month. – December 24, 2020.

  • Ku Li your statement is a half bake one, can you with all honestly be specific who is actually endangering the Malays? Of all the parties why dumb umno that you single out can make the Malays safe? If you can't it simply says the dumb umno malays are the ones felt threaten cause you dumb umno members can't get a free ride anymore. The dumb umno malays leaders are the ones caught with all the negative elements and sad to say these bad elements went down to the grassroots level who are always hungry for more feeding and to make things worst this has split over to the civil servants level. In a nut shell its the dumb umno malays including yourself that are afraid of your own shadows.

  • Safe from what? From hantu, potianak or its own shadow? If anything, the Malays should be fearful of those who used them to retain power under the guise of bangsa dan agama.
