TENGKU Razaleigh Hamzah has denounced the leadership of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and the Perikatan Nasional government by labelling it illegitimate, even though his party Umno is part of the ruling coalition.

The Umno advisory council chairman said he aligned himself with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to oppose the current regime as it was not chosen by the public.

“I am sharing the platform with Dr Mahathir today purely because I want to make sure we have a legitimate government. The government we have today is not a legitimate one.

“The prime minister in office today is also not a legitimate prime minister,” Tengku Razaleigh said in a press conference today alongside Dr Mahathir.

The two veterans proposed a helping hand if Muhyiddin’s government collapses, should the budget not be approved at the third reading tomorrow.

By convention, a government is deemed to have fallen, if the supply bill is not passed.

Tengku Razaleigh said he was not afraid of any disciplinary action Umno might take against him after the party reiterated the support for the PN government, following the Perak kerfuffle.

“What disciplinary action? Everybody can support whoever they want to support,” he said.

The Gua Musang lawmaker said the current political climate is driving away potential investors, which would cause the economy to contract.

“I believe the government now is not valid. It is not stable. When the government is not stable, there will not be confidence not only in the government but economy as well. The investors will not be confident to invest in the country,” Tengku Razaleigh said.

The Kelantan prince, better known as Ku Li, added if there were no investors, the country’s economy will not grow, and this will affect the job market as well as the livelihood of all Malaysians.

“When this happens, there will be no growth in the economy. That means there will be no jobs created, which will then affect the youth just graduating from schools and universities,” he said.

PN has also failed in implementing proper policies since taking over the government in February, Tengku Razaleigh said.

“When there are no firm policies, you cannot convince the investors. This is a big problem,” he said.

Tengku Razaleigh previously urged politicians, including those from his party Umno, to vote in Parliament according to their conscience instead of following the party’s stand. – December 14, 2020.
