THE Terengganu government wants to “cure” transvestites of their “gender identity disorder” via rehabilitation and counselling, said a state exco today.
Terengganu Communications, Multimedia and Special Functions Committee chairman Ghazali Taib told Bernama the state government was looking at various ways to help transvestites involved in prostitution to rebuild their lives, such as by lending aid for them to start a small business.
The state government was talking with the state Religious Affairs Department to identify the group in need of rehabilitation, he said.
“We will identify and categorise them… whether they are doing immoral activities because of life’s pressures or because of habit.
“We will help and provide them with rehabilitation and counselling so that their gender identity disorder could be cured,” he told a press conference at a Haflu Al-Takrim Al-Sanawi ceremony of Kolej Al-Quran here.
The state government would also study the reasons transvestites became involved in immoral activities, and would take stern action if the transvestites were found to be still involved in such activities.
On reports of prostitution activities at a flat in the city, Ghazali said the matter had been referred to the police and it had been found that only a small number of transvestites from Terengganu were involved.
“We will see if they are doing that due to life’s pressure and difficulty of getting jobs… the government will consider assistance for them to do business. – December 21, 2017.
