THREE suspects who robbed and killed a former Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) researcher at his home in Bangsar on Sunday have been detained early this morning.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Huzir Mohamed said all three men were arrested at three locations between 3.30am and 5am today.

Huzir also said one of the men detained was the main suspect.

“The first man we detained was at Jalan Genting Klang about 3.30am, and following the man’s arrest, we detained another man in Air Panas, Setapak, about 4.30am.

“Then, we managed to track down the main suspect in Jalan Rinching Semenyih. The man is 23, with a record of two crimes.

“All three suspects have confessed that they were part of the robbery and murder of the former Mardi researcher,” said Huzir.

He said police are tracking down another man from the group who has gone hiding.

“We are looking for Sugu Tanggaraju. He is also part of the group. We believe that the case is now almost complete with the arrest of the three and we will soon apprehend the fourth suspect,” he added.

On Sunday morning, two robbers broke into the home of 73-year-old Wan Hassan Wan Embong in Bangsar.

A scuffle broke out after he tried fending the robbers off. This led to him being fatally injured.

The robbers then committed a second robbery in Titiwangsa the same day.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Saiful Azly Kamaruddin in a press conference yesterday said police arrested 10 men aged between 21 and 29.

“The robbers in both cases were found to be the same two suspects. The rest were found to be linked to the cases, ” he said, adding that one suspect had also confessed to the crime.

The cops managed to connect the two cases after one of the suspects accidentally dropped a wallet belonging to the deceased victim of the first robbery.

“The second robbery saw no injuries and the family were tied up by the robbers during the 5.15am incident.

“Since the suspects were not masked, a photofit sketch of the suspect was made by the family, ” Saiful Azly said.

He said the wife of the former Mardi researcher also successfully identified the suspects when they had been caught. – December 1, 2020.
