MUHYIDDIN Yassin should resign and allow the MPs to choose a new prime if his government’s budget fails to pass in the Dewan Rakyat tomorrow, said Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

A general election was unnecessary as the MPs could decide who had majority support, he wrote on his blog today.

Dr Mahathir, who said he would vote against the supply bill, said its failure to pass would mean Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional government had lost legitimacy.

“When this happens, if the prime minister is a dignified person, he will resign,” he said.

“He can then advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to dissolve parliament.

“But at the moment, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, holding a general election can be harmful.

“Therefore the next step to be considered is to give parliament the opportunity to determine who among the MPs has majority support.

“If the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is satisfied that the MP has the majority support, they can then appoint the prime minister to form a new government and serve until the end of the term and it is time for the 15th general election to be held.”

The former prime minister said this was the best way to ensure the new government had legitimacy and was not under constant doubt as PN was.

“Once a new government is established, it can then choose to table a new budget or take the budget that has been rejected and amend it as has been requested (by the MPs).

“All this can be done in a special session of parliament; it will not take long.” – November 25, 2020.
