MALAYSIA seems to have lost its way in the war against the Covid-19 pandemic, said DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

Citing the sharp rise in daily infection cases, the Iskandar Puteri MP stated that Malaysia could overtake Singapore in a week and China by the end of the year as a country with more Covid-19 infections if daily cases continue to record four digit occurrences.

“Malaysia made considerable progress but with the advent of the third wave of the pandemic, we have lagged behind and lost out to several other nations and is now placed no. 84 among countries in the world with 51,680 cases.

“If we continue with a four-digit daily increase of Covid-19 infections, we will overtake Singapore in a week and China by the end of the year as a country with more Covid-19 infections.

“Have we lost control over the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic?“ asked Lim.

Lim said he had suggested the government adopt an “all-of-government” and “whole-of-society” approach in the invisible war against the Covid-19.

However, he said his idea fell on deaf ears.

Lim then accused the Perikatan Nasional government of only being interested in using the Covid-19 pandemic to convince the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to declare a state of emergency in Malaysia and suspend Parliament.

“I had suggested more than six months ago that the government should adopt an ‘all of government‘ and ‘whole of society’ approach but the advice fell on deaf ears.

“Putrajaya is only interested in emergency and to suspend Parliament and this is why next Thursday will be a D-Day for parliamentary democracy in Malaysia.

“Will Muhyiddin Yassin’s government show a positive response to the ‘confidence and supply’ proposal so that there could be an ‘all of government’ and ‘whole of society’ war against the Covid-19 epidemic led by all the 220 MPs in Parliament next Thursday,” Lim said.

The second reading vote for Budget 2021 will take place on November 25.

RM322.5 billion have been allocated in the 2021 Budget, the biggest in the country’s history.

There were fears that the opposition and several MPs from Umno will move to reject the Budget in a vote next Thursday.

Anwar Ibrahim had said in a statement that the opposition will not support the Budget if it is not amended to meet some of the changes requested.

Najib Razak also said Barisan Nasional would only back the Budget if the people are allowed to use their money from the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) and given an automatic extension of the loan moratorium. – November 20, 2020.
