PUTRAJAYA is planning to restrict foreign worker movements following the Covid-19 spike in construction sites, said Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof.

“The Health Ministry is coming up with a comprehensive plan to overcome the spread of Covid-19 among foreign workers.

“This includes restricting movements, improving an action plan and raising the standards of their accommodation,” said the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department during the question time in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Redzuan said that the government is looking at a mechanism to monitor their movements and ensure they take Covid-19 tests.

The National Security Council met yesterday and instructed the housing and local government and health ministers to come up with a comprehensive plan to house foreign workers to stop the spread of Covid-19 among them.

“The government will enforce the basic requirements stated under the Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act,” said Redzuan.

The minister was responding to Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh’s (Ledang-PH) question on how the government plans to curb the spread of Covid-19 among foreign workers.

On Monday, the Damanlela construction site in Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest number of new positive Covid-19 cases at 460 out of 475 new cases recorded in the city.

Since the Damanlela cluster was detected on November 7, the cluster has recorded 1,346 cases up to yesterday.

According to the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), the surge in Covid-19 cases linked to the sites is due to construction workers under subcontractors moving from one construction site to another once a project is completed. – November 19, 2020.
