THE Rantau Panjang water treatment plant is back up and running again, after recording a threshold odour number (TON) of zero, said the Selangor Water Management Board (Luas).

“Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause of the odour pollution.

“As at 9.30pm, the plant has resumed operations,” the board said in an update.

Any further developments will be informed from time to time, it added.

Luas had earlier said the plant was halting operations as a solvent-like odour with a TON of one was detected at 7pm today.

“Luas said Air Selangor and the parties involved are conducting investigations and immediate mitigation action. Any developments will be informed from time to time,” said Luas in a post on its Facebook page.

The statement did not say how many households were affected by the shutdown or how long it will take before the plant operates again.

The Rantau Panjang plant was among four that were shut down last week following an industrial waste leakage from a Indah Water Konsortium sewage treatment plant.

The shutdown last week of the four water treatment plants affected 1.14 million account holders in 1,279 areas across Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat.

It was the third large-scale disruption in recent months in the Klang Valley.

Early last month, the Sg Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi water treatment plants were shut down due to river contamination.

Later in the same month, the Sg Selangor water treatment plants 1, 2 and 3, and the Rantau Panjang plant were also closed after pollution was detected in the river.

September also saw six days of supply disruption involving the same water treatment plants due to river pollution. – November 18, 2020.
