Tiong says sorry, didn't mean to criticise frontliners

Tiong King Sing says he did not mean to criticise front-line medical workers. – November 15, 2020.

BINTULU MP Tiong King Sing today apologised for saying in the Dewan Rakyat that the director-general of health did not visit Sabah at the peak of Covid-19 infections because he was afraid to die.

Tiong said he had no intention of criticising the frontliners, especially Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

“I was only debating the Covid-19 issue that is worrying the people so that it could be immediately resolved,” he said in a statement.

“I had no intention whatsoever to criticise the hard work of our frontliners, especially the D-G.

“I would like to apologise for my words during the 2021 Budget debate.”

Tiong’s apology came four days after he refused retract remarks suggesting the director-general of health was a coward for not going to Sabah to assess the Covid-19 situation.

“No retraction. This is from the frontliners,” said Tiong in response to Deputy Speaker Azalina Othman Said’s query if he wished to apologise, retract or clarify his remarks about Dr Noor Hisham  in the Dewan Rakyat.

Tiong had  dismissed the health official’s work in relation to the coronavirus epidemic.

Umno lawmaker Shahidan Kassim defended Tiong, saying his statement has been distorted by the opposition.

The Perikatan Nasional Backbenchers’ Club (PNBBC) chairman said Tiong was only delivering a message from Sabah front-line medical workers, who asked why Dr Noor Hisham did not go to the ground in Sabah as Covid-19 infections spread in the state.

Jelutong MP R.SN. Rayer was expelled from the Dewan Rakyat he got into a shouting match with Tiong over the remarks on Dr Noor Hisham.

In his speech, Tiong claimed that “the director general of health was afraid to die” because he had never visited areas severely affected by Covid-19 in Sabah. – November 15, 2020.
