STUDENT activist Wong Yan Ke will be charged tomorrow with disobeying an order issued by a public servant, Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) said today,

Wong, who was the president of the student group, is due to appear tomorrow morning in the Petaling Jaya magistrate’s court, Umay said in a statement.

He faces the charge of disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant, under Section 188 of Penal Code. The offence is punishable with jail for up to a month, a maximum RM400 fine, or both.

Wong was arrested by the police last week for recording and live-streaming a police raid on the home of Umany president Yap Wen Qing in Petaling Jaya.

Umany and Yap are under police investigation for sedition over a statement Umany posted on social media

The statement questioned the powers vested in the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which had prompted Universiti Malaya to file a police report.

Earlier today Umany apologised to the king and withdrew the statement it published on October 30 on its social media channels.

“After consulting with several constitutional experts, Umany has decided to withdraw the statement titled ‘Yang di-Pertuan Agong Should Not Interfere in National Affairs’ published on October 30 on our English and Chinese Facebook pages.

“We affirm our adherence to the constitutional monarchy system in Malaysia and respect the role of the Agong in the constitution.

“We would like to apologise to the Agong and the public for our lack of thorough understanding of the constitution,” it said in a statement today.

The student group had issued its statement after the king rejected Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s proposal for a proclamation of emergency and advised MPs to support Budget 2021 tabled last Friday. – November 12, 2020.
