Turkey’s earthquake death toll hits 69 as search, rescue continues

SEARCH and rescue efforts continued in Turkey’s Aegean region last night after the magnitude-6.6 quake hit the region, Anadolu Agency reported.

The death toll from Friday’s earthquake rose to 69, Turkey’s disaster and emergency management authority (Afad) said.

As of 7pm local time yesterday, 987 aftershocks – 43 of them of at least magnitude 4 – have hit the area, Afad said.

It added that 949 people have been injured, 729 of which have been discharged from hospital, while 220 people are still receiving treatment.

Temporary accommodation centres were established in Izmir, with 3,500 tents, 60 general purpose tents, 24,400 blankets, 13,300 beds, 5,500 sleeping sets, 2,700 kitchen sets, and four showers and toilet containers shipped to the zone, Afad said. – Bernama, November 2, 2020.
