THE police have arrested Sungai Pelek assemblyman Ronnie Liu for sedition after he uploaded a Facebook post about Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.
He was arrested upon arrival at Petaling Jaya police headquarters this morning, after police yesterday stated they wanted to question him in connection with the post.
Bukit Aman CID deputy director (investigation/legal) Mior Faridalathrash Wahid confirmed the arrest.
He said Liu is being investigated under the Sedition Act and the Communications and Multimedia Act.
An online portal quoted Liu’s lawyer Jadavish Chandra as saying that his client was at the police station for questioning when officers from the federal police headquarters decided to take him in.
Reportedly, Liu’s post compared the ongoing protests in Thailand with the situation in Malaysia, which prompted a number of citizens to file police reports against the DAP assemblyman.
Yesterday, Bukit Aman CID director Huzir Mohamed said Liu uploaded pictures of protesters at an anti-government protest in Bangkok, Thailand.
In Liu’s posting, an accompanying caption read: “Now in Bangkok. They are saying no to the king”.
“On October 21, an investigation was launched against a statement uploaded by a Facebook account owner named Ronnie Liu Tian Khiew.
“Investigations have been classified under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act for inciting hatred or insults towards the monarchy and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for misusing networking facilities,” Huzir had said in a statement.
Aside from Liu, police are also investigating three other people on suspicion of insulting the king on social media. – October 28, 2020.
