More than 50% clusters still active, 9 new ones recorded

MALAYSIA recorded another nine clusters of Covid-19 infections, with four of them reported in Sabah, said director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Noor Hisham said Malaysia has reported 225 clusters since the onset of the pandemic, with 116 clusters still being active, or about 50%. 

The nine latest clusters have been named Titir, Omadal, Bandaran, Jambul, Bayan, Mentari, Jernih, Seladah and Makekar. 

“A total of 108 cases are reported in these clusters, with 53 cases reported in the four clusters from Sabah,” Noor Hisham said in a statement today, after his daily Covid-19 press briefing was called-off at the eleventh hour without any reasons given. 

As for the breakdown of clusters, a total of 23 people have been screened in the Titir cluster, which involves the Keningau district in Sabah. 

As of noon today, 12 people have been detected positive. The results of the others were not revealed in the statement. 

The Omadal cluster involves the Semporna district in Sabah. From the 188 people that have been screened, 21 have tested positive while 167 tested negative. 

The Bandaran cluster, involving the Kota Kinabalu district had 41 people screened so far, with 12 testing positive and 29 negative. 

The final cluster in Sabah for today is the Jambul cluster, which involves Sandakan district. 

Eight people have tested positive from the 30 screened, while negative (20) and waiting for results (2). 

In Penang, the Bayan cluster was reported, which involves the North Seberang Perai, Barat Daya and Timur Laut districts. 

From the 216 people screened here, six have tested positive, negative (60) and are waiting for results (150).

The Mentari cluster involves three states and several districts. 

It involves Petaling, Klang, Gombak district in Selangor; Seremban district in Negeri Sembilan and Kepong district in Kuala Lumpur.

Out of 93 screened, 17 have tested positive, 10 negative and 66 are awaiting results. 

The Seremban district also reported its own cluster – the Jernih cluster, where 76 people have been screened as of noon today.

Fifteen people have tested positive while 61 are waiting for their results. 

The Makekar cluster also involves several states and districts. 

It involves the Johor Baru and Kulai districts in Johor: Kemaman, Dungun, Kuala Terengganu and Marang districts in Terengganu and Klang district in Selangor. 

Tests on 106 people came back negative, while only 10 have tested positive, with 16 still waiting for results. 

The sole cluster in Sarawak reported today involved the Kuching and Serian districts, where seven positive cases have been identified from the 18 people screened.

Four have been tested negative, while seven more are still waiting for results. 

Malaysia today reported 823 new Covid-19 cases and eight deaths. 

The Klang Valley had 99 cases or 12% of today’s total, with Selangor contributing 88 of them, followed by Kuala Lumpur (10) and Putrajaya (1).

Of these 99 cases, Noor Hisham said that 44 cases or 44.4% were reported in existing and new clusters. 

Forty-three active clusters have reported new cases today. 

The Seberang Perai prison cluster in Penang was the highest contributor with 94 cases, followed by the Kepayan prison cluster in Sabah. – October 25, 2020.
