THE Yang di-Pertuan Agong has rejected Putrajaya’s request for emergency powers to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said after discussing the request with the Conference of Malay Rulers,  Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah is of the view the federal government’s measures to fight the pandemic have been effective.

“His Highness has confidence in the government under the leadership of the prime minister to continue implementing policies and enforcement action to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“Al-Sultan Abdullah is of the view there is no need at the present time to declare an emergency in the country or any other parts of Malaysia,” he said in a statement.

The comptroller said Al-Sultan Abdullah was deeply concerned about people’s anxiety over the spike in new COVID-19 clusters, cases in the country.

“Al-Sultan Abdullah has expressed his confidence that with the strong spirit of unity and fighting spirit that we have demonstrated previously, we will be united again to battle the third wave of the pandemic,” the statement said

The statement comes after a one and a half hour meeting among the Malay rulers at Istana Negara today to discuss Putrajaya’s request to impose emergency rule.

On Friday, after a special cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin presented the king with the Perikatan Nasional government’s proposal for an emergency, purportedly to address the deepening Covid-19 crisis that has plagued the country.

However, he is also due to face a potential vote of no confidence when Parliament convenes on November 2.

Budget 2021 is set to be tabled later in the week on November 6. Critics charge the prime minister with wanting to avoid potentially having his government toppled by MPs and hold on to power by calling an emergency, which would see Parliament suspended. – October 25, 2020.
