STATE rulers have left Istana Negara this evening after meeting for one-and-half hours discussing Putrajaya’s purported plan to impose a state of emergency to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Vehicles including entourage carrying the sultans of Selangor, Johor, Terengganu, Perak, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan and Perlis were seen exiting the National Palace gate at about 5.10pm.

The meeting started at 2.30pm and was chaired by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

The Sultan of Kelantan Sultan Muhammad V, however, did not show up at today’s meeting.

On Friday, after a special cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin presented the king with the Perikatan Nasional government’s proposal for an emergency, purportedly to address the deepening Covid-19 crisis that has plagued the country.

However, he is also due to face a potential vote of no confidence when Parliament convenes on November 2. Budget 2021 is set to be tabled later in the week on November 6.

Critics charge the prime minister with wanting to avoid such a scenario and hold on to power by calling an emergency, which would see Parliament suspended.

Earlier this morning, two civic groups who were against Muhyiddin’s motion to call for an emergency submitted a memorandum to the agong.

The two groups later dispersed peacefully after handing over the letter to the king’s representative. – October 25, 2020.
