THE Malay rulers will hold a special meeting this weekend to discuss the Perikatan Nasional government’s plan to declare an emergency to tackle the worsening Covid-19 situation, said sources.

They said  Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah will confer with the state rulers to get their views on the proposal.

The sources told The Malaysian Insight that while the Agong has the final say on the promulgation of an emergency, he wished to have the feedback of the sultans.

“The meeting will be held over the weekend, after which the Agong will deliver his decision on the matter to the prime minister,” said a source.

A source in Putrajaya said the king wished to meet the sultans to obtain their input.

It is unclear if the rulers will meet physically or virtually, as a group or individually with the king.

Yesterday Muyhiddin Yassin and several senior ministers presented the Agong with the emergency plan in Istana Abdulaziz in Kuantan.

Earlier in the day, the cabinet voted in a special meeting to declare a state of emergency amid political instability and a coronavirus outbreak.

The plan comes at a time Muhyiddin is facing internal and external political pressure.

He faces the likelihood of a no-confidence vote on top of the risk of failing to pass the national budget when parliament convenes next month.

An emergency declaration could mean the suspension of parliament which would thwart both threats to his power.

Sources in Putrajaya have said a state of emergency would suspend only political activities and not economic and other activities.

  • Now that we know that the purpose is not to control the spread of virus, and its for the backdoor PM to cling on to power, we should voice our strongest opposition in this misuse of power.
