ANWAR Ibrahim stunned the country a month ago on September 23 to announce he had majority support in the Dewan Rakyat to form the next government.

The PKR president also announced on national television that Muhyiddin Yassin’s Perikatan Nasional government has collapsed, paving way for him to be he next prime minister.

Anwar’s announcement came almost seven months after Muhyiddin pulled his party Bersatu out of Pakatan Harapan, causing the then ruling coalition to collapse. He was after that sworn in as prime minister.

However, a month after Anwar’s announcement, the Port Dickson MP’s bid to become the next prime minister, appears to have lost momentum.

On Wednesday, his former colleague and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Umno will call for a ceasefire with Bersatu. That should have been the end of it.

With just 10 days before the final Parliament session kicks off, Muhyiddin appears to have reinforced Anwar’s earlier announcement that the prime minister has lost majority support when a cabinet meeting yesterday decided in favour of an emergency to tackle the political impasse and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Muhyiddin and an entourage had an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in Kuantan, Pahang later yesterday, but no announcement was made after a two-hour meeting.

If a decision is made on enforcing emergency any time soon, the National Security Council will be given full powers to pass important bills such as Budget 2021 without Parliament.

Muhyiddin also need not face the risk of the many no-confidence motions filed in Parliament as there will be no meetings.

Here’s a look of what has happened in the past 30 days since Anwar’s announcement on September 23. – October 24, 2020.
