KHAIRY Jamaluddin has publicly declared he would not support Anwar Ibrahim as the next prime minister after a letter surfaced on social media alleging Umno has thrown its support behind the opposition leader.
The letter, which was allegedly sent to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, is signed by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Barisan Nasional adviser and Pekan MP Najib Razak.
“I hope other Umno MPs will make their positions clear. Let’s see who has the numbers,” Khairy, who is the science, technology and innovation minister, said on Instagram today.
The letter, dated October 11, is titled “Umno MPs unanimously support Port Dickson MP Anwar Ibrahim to be appointed as the 9th Prime Minister”.
The letter, bearing Umno’s letterhead, has been circulating on social media today.
The Malaysian Insight had similarly received copies of the letter from Bersatu members.
Another letter making the rounds on social media is of one allegedly sent by Anwar to the king on Monday.
The letter, bearing a PKR letterhead, said that Anwar had the support of 131 MPs from PKR, Umno, Amanah, DAP and one independent.
The letter, however, does not reveal the names of the MPs.
The Malaysian Insight is attempting to confirm the letters with Umno and PKR. – October 17, 2020.
