SOME MPs in a purported list of 121 lawmakers who support Anwar Ibrahim to be the new prime minister have lodged police reports denying the matter, police said today.

Criminal Investigation Department director Huzir Mohamed said 113 reports have been lodged against the opposition leader and Pakatan Harapan chairman.

“They include complaints from MPs denying that they support him,” he said in statement without specifying the number of reports lodged by parliamentarians.

Huzir added Anwar’s claim, reported by the media, had “triggered unhealthy speculation with the intention of instilling fear and anxiety in the public”.

He said this could cause people to act in a way that is disruptive to public peace.

Police at the federal headquarters in Bukit Aman questioned Anwar for about two hours yesterday over his list of 121 MPs said to back him in changing the government.

Huzir said the contents of the list had been reported by the online portal MH Daily.

The investigation falls under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of Communications and Multimedia Act.

Anwar had yesterday said he refused to give the names of the MPs to the police, saying it was a matter between himself and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

He had an audience with the king on Tuesday and presented documentary evidence of his support, but said he did not reveal the MPs’ names.

The king is in the process of meeting the heads of various political parties to verify the claims of support for Anwar. – October 17, 2020.
