FT mosques, surau get nod for Friday and daily prayers

PUTRAJAYA will allow Friday and daily prayers to be conducted at mosques and surau in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, said Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

However, social distancing will need to be observed. There should be no more than 50 people present at Friday prayers and no more than 20 people at daily prayers, or depending on the size of the premises.

“There must be social distancing of 1m during prayers. 

“It is subject to the size of the premises and social distancing,” Ismail Sabri said in a video update on the Covid-19 pandemic from his home, where he is currently under self-quarantine.

The new permission granted to mosques in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya begins today, and tomorrow for Labuan, until the end of the conditional movement-control order (CMCO) for the respective areas.

CMCO in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya ends on October 27 and Labuan on October 30.

A total of 782 mosques and surau in the three areas will be involved.

As for Selangor, Friday prayers will remain suspended for the duration of the CMCO until October 27. This will affect 2,450 mosques and surau.

However, he said the azan, or call to prayer, can be made, while daily prayers are allowed with no more than six people including the muazzin and imam. – October 16, 2020.
