UMNO has been asked to submit its revised terms for political cooperation with Perikatan Nasional (PN) with a formal letter to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

However, the party’s Supreme Council will discuss the terms and the letter first, at its meeting next Tuesday, media quoted Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan as saying in Benut, Pontian, today.

“We have been asked to submit an official letter listing Umno’s demands or the new terms to our political cooperation with PN.

“However, I want to delay sending the letter until the Umno Supreme Council meets on Tuesday,” Maslan, who is Pontian MP, said after an event in his constituency.

The request for the letter was made by Muhyiddin, who is also PN chairman and Bersatu president, he added.

It was conveyed through Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainuddin during a video conference call with Maslan and Umno treasurer Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, who was representing party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The video conference between the three was held on Wednesday night.

“Tengku Adnan and I detailed Umno’s terms for the prime minister so that political cooperation can be improved between Umno and PN.

“We were asked to submit an official letter with the terms.”

He denied that asking for new terms amounted to threatening the PN government.

“People can have their views. I’m just stating facts that Umno is the party with more seats and should therefore be given more space in the PN government.”

Maslan also said the Supreme Council meeting was originally scheduled for tomorrow as a video conference but instead it will be held in Pahang on Tuesday as the members wanted to meet in person.

“The meeting is being held in Pahang, on October 20 at 3pm to allow Supreme Council members to attend.

“We chose Pahang as the venue for the meeting as locations in Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor are currently under the conditional movement-control order,” he said.

Meanwhile, Umno Supreme Council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman was quoted by The Star as saying that the deputy prime minister’s post should be given to the party.

This was because Umno had the strongest influence with the most number of parliamentary seats within PN.

“We contributed the highest number of seats in Parliament so maybe the deputy prime minister post should be given to us,” he told The Star. – October 16, 2020.
