TWO new Covid-19 clusters have been detected – one each in Sabah and Selangor – bringing the total number of active clusters nationwide to seven.

Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the cluster in Sabah, dubbed as the Kau Sing cluster, was started by a 20-year-old man who had tested positive for the virus on September 25.

“He has been sent to Tawau Hospital,” said Dr Noor Hisham in a statement today.

He added that seven people have been tested positive in the cluster – five were Malaysians and two were foreigners.

Twenty-seven individuals have been screened so far, said Dr Noor Hisham.

The source of the infection for this cluster is still under investigation.

The new cluster detected in Selangor today is named the Embun cluster with the index case being a 41-year-old man who was found positive after screening.

The man has been sent to Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.

“Four close contacts have been found positive and as of today, 52 people have been screened with 21 testing negative and the rest are still waiting for test results,” Dr Noor Hisham added.

Five other active clusters are Tembok in Kedah/Perak, Benteng Lahad Datu in Sabah, Jalan Meru in Selangor, Bangau-Bangau in Sabah and Bah Rose in Kedah/Penang.

The Tembok cluster, which involves the Alor Setar prison and staff quarters, has 112 new cases.

Earlier today, Putrajaya placed the prison and its quarters under targeted enhanced movement-control order (TEMCO) for two weeks to curb the spread of the virus.

The lockdown for the prison and its staff quarters will begin at midnight.

Malaysia today reported 293 new infections – the bulk of cases coming from Sabah and Kedah.

Sabah recorded 126 new cases while Kedah reported 113. – October 4, 2020.
