FORMER education minister Dr Maszlee Malik raised more than RM150,000 in 24 hours in emergency funds to help stranded university students following last-minute intake changes on Friday.
He has now closed the fund and is vetting applicants.
In his Facebook post yesterday, the Simpang Renggam MP said he managed to collect RM150,648 from the public.
He also received more than 4,700 applications from students affected by the Higher Education Ministry’s decision to postpone intake for October following the rise of Covid-19 cases.
“Until 7pm October 3, we managed to collect RM150,648 in less than 24 hours,” he said.
“We have closed the #SiswajagaSiswa campaign to allow screening process and to speed up the distribution of funds.”
So far, 50 students in critical conditions have received the aid.
A special audit will be performed and the details shared online, he said.
“I would like to thank Malaysians who helped in this campaign, even donating as small as RM1.
“At the same time, a special audit will be conducted to ensure that each sen donated will go to the needy. Thank you, Malaysia. #rakyatjagarakyat.”
Earlier, Maszlee said parents and students complained about not having enough money for transportation and accommodation after the intake postponement.
On Friday, the ministry advised all public institutions of higher learning to defer physical intakes in view of growing Covid-19 cases. – October 4, 2020.
