Vui Keong to be buried on Monday, says brother

THE late Batu Sapi MP Liew Vui Keong will be buried at the Nirvana Memorial Park in Telipok, Kota Kinabalu on Monday.

According to his younger brother, Peter, Vui Keong’s body would be taken to a church for funeral service before the burial.

“We are trying to speed up the (funeral) arrangements,” he told reporters at Vui Keong’s residence today.

Peter said his brother had been receiving treatment at a private hospital here since September 9, and he was informed of his death at 11.50am today.

He said Vui Keong had told him he had suffered cramps on his left thigh after driving around to several places for five days.

Peter said the former federal minister was a cheerful and helpful person and that his death is a big loss to the family.

It was previously reported Vui Keong was in a critical condition after undergoing treatment for lung infection.

The Warisan permanent chairman was missing for most of the Sabah elections, which ended last weekend.

Earlier this week, the family asked for privacy when rumours started floating about his condition.

Vui Keong had previously been Sandakan MP from 2008 to 2013, when he was with Barisan Nasional component the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), of which he was president.

He was also deputy international trade and industry minister, as well as deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of law, during this period.

He quit LDP and BN in 2018 and joined Warisan.

He leaves his wife Dr Lindai Lee, and four children.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin conveyed his condolences to Vui Keong’s family, saying he knew the latter as someone dedicated to his work and responsibility.

“I received news about the death of Vui Keong, the MP for Batu Sapi. My family and I wish to extend our condolences to the family on the loss of their loved one,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

On behalf of the government, Muhyiddin also expressed its highest appreciation and gratitude on Vui Keong’s contributions during his tenure as an MP and minister.

The Sabah government also expressed its condolences to the late MP’s family.

Chief Minister Hajiji Noor said he hoped Vui Keong’s family would be patient, remain strong and accept this as fate. – Bernama, October 2, 2020.
