Malaysia records second highest daily Covid-19 toll at 260

MALAYSIA today reported the second highest number of Covid-19 cases in a single day with 260 new infections in the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in his weekly presser today that only one of the 260 cases is imported while the remaining 259 are local transmissions.

Sabah accounts for the bulk of the infections with 118 cases.

The highest number of cases in a single day was 277 on June 4. Before that, Malaysia had recorded a record high of 235 cases on March 26.

Today’s numbers are the highest since the start of the recovery movement control order on June 9.

The new daily cases have brought the national caseload to 11,484.

Citizens account for 130 of the locally transmitted cases while the remaining 129 are foreigners.

There are now 1,334 active cases.

Meanwhile, 47 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

With this, the total number of recoveries from the virus stands at 10,014.

Twenty patients are currently warded in intensive care, with three intubated.

No new fatalities were reported today, keeping the death toll from the virus at 136.

The Laut cluster in Sabah contributed to 74 cases, all foreigners. The Benteng Lahad Datu and Bangau-Bangau clusters reported 10 cases each.

The Bakau cluster saw one case, while a new cluster known as Joo Hwa discovered in Tawau registered one case. 

Inter-district  travel in Sabah will be restricted from midnight tonight. 

Kedah reported 98 new cases today, with 88 from the  Tembok Prison cluster. 

Kuala Lumpur and Selangor reported 14 and 13 cases respectively, while Johor reported five cases, four of which are from the Bakawali cluster. 

Other states that reported fresh cases are Terengganu, Perlis, Malacca, Penang and Pahang. 

Apart from Joo Hwa, the health authorities have also  confirmed three new clusters, namely the Bah Ketil cluster in Langkawi (3 cases), Selasih in Putrajaya (5 cases) and Jalan Meru in Klang (3 cases). – October 1, 2020.
