ANNUAR Musa today dismissed talk that several Umno lawmakers will be joining opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim who has claimed to have sufficient parliamentary support to form the government.

The Umno Supreme Council member said the party leadership had yet to discuss the latest political intrigue in the nation that has caught the attention of the international press.

“The claim made by Anwar has never been discussed in Umno. I have been asking friends because I have got a list of some people allegedly joining Anwar, but when I called them, all of them denied it,” said Annuar who is also Barisan Nasional secretary-general.

“So I am still quite puzzled by the claim. I have even spoken to the party president (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi).

“Maybe his (Anwar’s) statement earlier was made at the individual level; it was certainly not made at the party level so the party has no cause to discuss the matter,” he said at a press conference today at the Federal Territories Ministry.

Zahid has said he will not stop Barisan Nasional or Umno lawmakers who wish to join Anwar.

Following Zahid’s statement, it was reported that Umno, PAS and Bersatu would meet this week to discuss Anwar’s claims.

Today Annuar said it has been decided that all Umno members would toe the party line whatever happens next.

“We can negotiate over anything but not Anwar, not DAP.  This is the party decision and this decision stays.”

He said it is possible Anwar had deliberately made his announcement just before the Sabah elections.

“Anwar made the announcement a few days before the Sabah elections. The elections are over so now the focus should be on forming the government and delivering what has been promised.”

Annuar said the government has to prioritise efforts to eradicate poverty which rate has risen.

“We should not worry about political issues for now; the economy should be the main priority.

“We must work towards national unity. As far as I’m concerned the prime minister has good ratings and we should move forward.”

He said Umno leaders meet every two weeks while the party’s next meeting with PAS is on October 7.

“That meeting is also not specifically over Anwar’s claims.” – October 1, 2020.

  • We will only know whether Anwar is telling the truth when he has an audience with the King. So the sooner he is granted an audience the sooner we can put this to rest.
