Sabah accounts for bulk of new Covid-19 cases

SABAH continues to see a spike in Covid-19 infections, with the state accounting for 64 of 82 new cases reported in the past 24 hours.

Eleven of the new cases involved people who returned to the peninsula from high-risk areas in Sabah between September 20 and yesterday, Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today.

Negri Sembilan reported two cases, Kuala Lumpur (3), Selangor (1), Terengganu (2), Pahang (1), Malacca (1) and Johor (1) as among those who had travelled to virus hotbed, Sabah.

Sabah now has four Covid-19 red zones – Tawau, Lahad Datu, Kunak and Semporna. 

Today, he said that, of the 82 new infections, 79 are local transmissions.

Citizens account for 53 of the locally transmitted cases while the remaining 26 are foreigners.

Today’s cases bring the national caseload to 10,769, of which 851 are active.

Eight patients are currently warded in intensive care, with four intubated.

There were 89 recoveries, putting the total number at 9,785.

No new fatalities were reported today, keeping the death toll at 133. 

Meanwhile, the Benteng Lahad Datu prison cluster saw 33 new cases, while 25 cases were reported from the Bangau-Bangau cluster linked to Semporna Hospital.

Other cases in Sabah include three symptomatic patients, one healthcare worker returning from the peninsula, one case of influenza-like illness at Tawau Health Clinic and another case at Women and Child Hospital in Likas. – September 26, 2020.
