DR Mahathir Mohamad has had his statement recorded at Perdana Leadership Foundation today in relation to the Bugis jibe he made during the Anti-Kleptrocracy Rally in Petaling Jaya two months ago.
“Questions were solely in relation to the Bugis jibe. Six policemen were here,” said Dr Mahathir’s legal team.
The policemen arrived in two police cars at 1.30pm.
It is understood that three police reports have been lodged against Dr Mahathir concerning the Bugis comment so far.
“Dr Mahathir told the police that he will answer all charges in court and also explained that it’s not aimed at all Bugis people at large (the remark) but only to the thief known as Najib,” said the legal team.
It is also understood that police posed 32 questions – 22 on the Anti-Kleptocracy rally in Petaling Jaya and 10 on the (remark) made at the IDCC event in July 2017,” he said.
Dr Mahathir also told the police that it would be stupid of him to shame all Bugis as the opposition also wanted to represent them and gain their support.
Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Fadzil Ahmat told The Malaysian Insight last month that the investigation team had opened two investigation papers on Dr Mahathir for his allegedly derogatory remarks about the Bugis community.
Fadzil said the papers were opened after the Pakatan Harapan chairman allegedly insulted the Bugis community during two speeches he made in Selangor.
The latest incident occurred on October 14 at the Anti-Kleptocracy Rally at Padang Timur in Petaling Jaya.
“I can confirm that we are investigating Dr Mahathir for his Bugis remarks. We will be recording his statement soon,” Fadzil told The Malaysian Insight.
Dr Mahathir is being investigated for sedition, intimidation and also for violation under Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission Act.
Dr Mahathir’s legal team head Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla said his client reserved the right to answer some of the questions in court.
“He answered what he can answer and reserved the remaining to answer them in court,” he said.
He added that the team from Bukit Aman spent about 45 minutes questioning Dr Mahathir.
“There were seven pages of questions. Four police officers and their two subordinates. They took about 45 minutes questioning Dr Mahathir,” he said.
He added that police should have just charged Dr Mahathir in court if the statesman had done wrong.
“Do not waste this old man’s time. This is not a murder investigation. Charge him in court,” said Haniff.
He added that he was not blaming the police as they were very courteous in carrying out their duty.
Haniff said this is the fifth time police has recorded Dr Mahathir’s statement over various issues. – December 13, 2017.
