POLICE have confirmed that one of the two Malaysians who took part in an Islamic State (IS) decapitation in Syria in 2015 has been killed in a drone attack.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar broke the news today on Twitter, saying: “Selepas meneliti inteligen yg diperolehi, @PDRMsia sahkan bahawa Muhamad Wandy telah terbunuh dlm satu serangan di Raqqa, Syria pd 29/4/17.” (After studying the available intelligence, PDRM confirms that Muhamad Wandy has been killed in an attack in Raqqa, Syria on April 29, 2017).
Muhamad Wanndy Muhamad Jedi, 26, was said to have been killed in a drone strike on April 29. His wife, Nor Mahmudah Ahmad, 28, had indicated that he was dead in a Facebook post the day he was killed.
Nor Mahmudah wrote: “My Mujahid, finally it is your time to go. I will remain here and carry on with the work you started. I accept this as fate.”
Many were sceptical of the information. A source told The Star that the 27-year-old IS member, who was high on the US wanted list, could have staged his own death to escape law enforcers worldwide.
Bukit Aman Special Branch director Commissioner Mohamad Fuzi Harun said police were working to ascertain the facts.
“We are checking. We want to know quickly.”
Wanndy was from Malacca, which he left in 2014 with his wife for Syria. A year later, he appeared as one of the executioners in an IS-style beheading that was recorded on video for release by the terrorist group’s propaganda channels. He was also reputed to be IS’ top recruiter
Mohd Faris Anwar, 20, from Kedah, was the other Malaysian man identified by police in the video of the beheading.
Police had said the two were members of Majmu’ah al-Arkhabiliy, the Malaysian-Indonesian wing of IS.
As of December last year, there are 60 Malaysians reported to be in Syria.
This is after 18 Malaysians have died fighting and nine have carried out suicide attacks for IS. – May 8, 2017.
