UMNO information chief Shahril Hamdan is the latest politician to have tested positive for the Covid-19 virus after campaigning in the Sabah elections.

Taking to Twitter this morning, Shahril said he had been informed today about the results of his screening.

“Covid+. No obvious symptoms melainkan penat sikit. Decided to test yesterday in KL for prudence after case spikes as I had been campaigning in Sabah.

“Just received call & will be taken in today. Am sorry for the inconvenience this will cause people who came into contact,” said the Umno youth chief.

Shahril is the second Umno leader to have tested positive after Umno supreme council member Mohd Razlan Rafii was admitted to the Kota Kinabalu Hospital on Monday.

Like Shahril, Razlan was campaigning in the Sabah election.

Besides the two, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was also tested for the coronavirus but was today told his test results were negative, his lead defence lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik told Malay Mail this morning.

Yesterday, Zahid’s defence team told Kuala Lumpur High Court that the Umno president underwent screening at KPJ Tawakkal Hospital in Kuala Lumpur.

The court allowed Zahid’s application to reschedule his trial pending the results of the second test.

Zahid is facing 47 charges: 12 counts of criminal breach of trust in relation to funds for charitable foundation Yayasan Akalbudi, 27 counts of money-laundering, and eight counts of bribery.

Like Razlan and Shahril, Zahid was also on the campaign trail in the Sabah election.

According to Barisan Nasional Sabah, Zahid is scheduled to be back in Sabah tomorrow to resume campaigning. – September 23, 2020.
