57 new cases, 40 recoveries

MALAYSIA today reported 57 new Covid-19 infections in the span of 24 hours, with the bulk of cases coming from Sabah. 

The new daily cases bring the national caseload to 10,276.

Sabah accounted for 49 of the 51 locally transmitted cases. 

Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the Pulau and Selamat clusters each saw 14 and 12 cases respectively. 

Noor Hisham said the Health Ministry has also discovered another cluster known as Kuarters in Tongod, Sabah. 

The cluster reported five infections, all of whom are Malaysians.

Meanwhile, the Benteng Lahad Datu cluster continued to report new infections with five new cases.

Four cases were detected at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Lahad Datu – of which two patients were symptomatic while the other two had sought treatment for severe acute respiratory illness.

Other infections reported in the state, include two cases at the Beaufort district police, discovered during a screening of lockup detainees while another two cases were detected among trainees of a rehabilitation centre.

Apart from Sabah, Kedah and Selangor were the other two states with new infections, each reporting one new case.

He said Malaysians accounted for 45 of the local transmissions while the remaining six were foreigners. 

There were six imported cases. 

Active cases, on the other hand, rose to 751 from 734 yesterday.

Noor Hisham said 40 patients were discharged from the hospital in the past 24 hours after recovering from the coronavirus. 

With this, the total number of recoveries now stands at 9,395. 

Nine patients are currently warded at the intensive care unit, with two requiring respiratory support. 

No new fatalities were reported today, keeping the death toll at 130. – September 21, 2020.
