KUALA Lumpur City Hall is looking at implementing an early warning system and adding more retention ponds to address flash floods in the city, said Annuar Musa.

“The discussion for both these matters is still ongoing,” said the Federal Territories minister after an event in the capital today.

“The deputy director of the Irrigation and Drainage Department had proposed, among others, that we include more flood maintenance ponds,” said Annuar.

As for the early warning system, the minister said it would give the public time to prepare for floods.

He said the early warning system could appear as a mobile app that will notify the people on areas in danger of flooding.

He added that clogged drainage systems and too many construction projects contributed to flash floods.

“Although City Hall is strict when it comes to offenders, it’s almost impossible to monitor everyone who pollutes the environment,” he said.

Flash floods struck major parts of the city on Thursday following a torrential downpour that began at 2pm.

Among the worst affected areas were Jalan Dang Wangi, Jalan Campbell, the Ampang highway and the Wangsa Maju LRT station. – September 13, 2020.
