GABUNGAN Parti Sarawak does not condone the PAS MP’s remarks about the Bible, the Borneo Post reported today.
Senior GPS leader Fadillah Yusof said he believed Pasir Puteh MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Nik Salleh’ views about the Bible are his own and not shared by his Islamist party.
Fadillah said while GPS is aligned with Perikatan Nasional, the Sarawak coalition does not support individuals within the components who go against the GPS struggle for the state.
He also emphasised that GPS was not a part of the PN pact.
“GPS is GPS. Our fight for Sarawak is clear. We prioritise our own Sarawak, which also includes our religious freedom for the sake of peace and harmony,” he said in Kuching today.
“Please do not bring this issue to Sarawak because we are a peaceful state where we respect one another regardless of our race and religion,” he said.
He added that that Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) set up by the state government and headed by Deputy Chief Minister Amar Douglas Uggah proved that GPS’ Sarawak is different from the peninsula.
Zawawi caused outrage when he said in Parliament that Christians are allowed to drink alcohol because the Bible had been distorted.
Christian groups in Sabah and Sarawak, as well as the Christian Federation of Malaysia, have demanded that the PAS man retract his statement and apologise.
Amid the controversy and a sedition probe, Zawawi has stood by his remarks. – September 7, 2020.
