PRIME Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is riding high on opinion polls purely on his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, said Mukhriz Mahathir.

The former Kedah menteri besar said apart from this one issue, the Bersatu president has kept mum on a range of issues.

“The government of the day led by Muhyiddin has only one issue – that is the Covid-19 issue. There is nothing on what the Perikatan Nasional has done on education issue or housing issue.

“If you want to make an assessment based on one issue, then of course you will get high approval rate,” said Mukhriz after a press conference in Putrajaya.

Mukhriz was commenting on Muhyiddin’s popularity in a survey conducted by Merdeka Centre from July to August.

According to the survey, seven out of 10 voters were satisfied with Muhyiddin’s performance as PM.

Its head of research, Ibrahim Suffian, said nine out of 10 Malays and Bumiputeras from Sabah and Sarawak gave the PM the thumbs-up.

He said: “69% of Malaysian voters felt Muhyiddin has done a fantastic job as the PM (while) 65% of Indians and 33% Chinese were satisfied with him.”

The survey was conducted between July 15 and August 10 to gauge voters’ perceptions towards the economy, leadership and current issues.

More than 90% of the respondents were also happy with how the government managed Covid-19 while 68% of the respondents agreed the government has helped the needy during the pandemic. – September 3, 2020.
